Whaddayagonnado?

So, it seems that the name isn't very fitting for this blog. Or is it? No, I don't think so. I re-started doing this after I lost my job and thought that I would easily be able to keep up with it. One 8 week contract later, and here I am updating 2 months late. I guess I should just do some of the main highlights of the last few months:

November

Not a whole lot happened in this last month. Of course, Thanksgiving was just last weekend but it was pretty uneventful. We went to Grandma's for lunch and then off to Mike's parents for dinner. I still managed to not totally stuff myself and I'm not quite sure how exactly that happened.

The only noteworthy event of the day happened when we went to see Jennifer and Joe's new house. Right before we head out, Elijah decides to run into the bathroom and lock the door. Being an older house, the door isn't all that easy to open from the inside and he can't get the door open by himself. We all spend the next 10 minutes trying to shove every small stick like object we can find into the door handle to pop the lock. Nothing seems to be working and the boy keeps asking why we don't open the door. Finally, Jennifer is able to pop the lock and we find Eli standing in the middle of the bathroom with his pants and underwear down around his ankles. He said he had to poop and was going to try to do it himself. (A for effort, but F for follow through.)

October

I think the most noteworthy event of October was Jennifer and Joe's wedding. It's been a long time coming since I can't even remember how long they have been together. I had the honor of doing a reading during the ceremony. As I'm sure Jennifer would tell the story one way, here's how I saw how things went down...

I got to the church a couple of hours before the ceremony was to begin and went to the bride's room to help the girls finish with the last details of getting ready. Working in a photo studio and helping to style models on set gave me quite the advantage and I was able to tape up dresses, fix shoes and make things presentable all around. The girls were having a good time getting ready, all game faces were on and things were looking good. I was fine.

With about 10 minutes to spare, I head upstairs to the sanctuary and take my seat next to Mike. The event is underway and the girls begin the procession. Tiffany and Kelly look great as they head down the aisle before the bride. All heads then turn to see the doors open and Diane and Jennifer coming through. Of course, Diane is a mess as this is her only daughter and I'm guessing she never thought this day would actually come. Halfway down the aisle, Jennifer starts to tear up as well and they both are trying their hardest to keep themselves together. Now, I'm not so fine.

Diane gives Jennifer away and the priest welcomes everybody to the ceremony. And of course, my reading is up first. I take my place, find my reading and look over at the happy couple sitting there....staring at me. And this is when I lose it. For some reason, I begin to tear up and can't seem to find my voice. After a few looks out into the crowd and a quick "Give me a second" I finally begin. I somehow manage to make it through the reading and with a quick sorry to Jennifer and Joe, head back to my seat. Really? What the heck was all that about?!?! I still to this day have no clue what made the flood gates open, but whatever. She'll try her hardest to not let me live this down but I don't care. I play it off like it was no big deal. She does have it on video though.

Other than that, everything else went great! The bride was beautiful, the reception was wonderful, the food was good and we got to see Frank dance. What more could you ask for?

I'm sure there were other things that happened in between the bigger events, but as you get older you seem to lose the details. Hopefully I'll get a little better at posting things when they happen. No promises though.

Sing Along

This is one of Elijah's favorites to sing right now!

Potty Training Boot Camp

The time has come for The Boy to start using the potty. That's it. No "He's old enough" or "He really should be." The time is now. We took the holiday weekend as a great opportunity to have a little training session since he was going to be home with us for 4 days. Here's how it went down:

Day 1-Friday

After trying to figure out a good way to start this out we decided on using a timer. The count down was for every 30 minutes and he would go sit on the potty. Hopefully he would go during one of these times and realize what he doing and that it was a good thing. This went on all day and to our surprise, no suck luck. I believe there was only one time where even a little spray came out. He seemed to go in his diaper either right before the time went off or shortly after he got off the pot. I'm willing to be that we went through 15 to 20 diapers that day since we weren't able to catch him in time. Funny thing now, every time he hears a timer go off he says it's time to sit on the potty. I guess that's a good thing?
Day 1-No Success

Day 2-Saturday

We woke up on Saturday and headed straight to the bathroom. Of course after I take his diaper off and realize that it's super full, I know that nothing is going to happen on this trip. We once again start setting the timer, this time at 20 minute intervals. Hoping to catch him just before he actually goes. Again, no luck. We decide that maybe he's just not feeling the wetness of it because of the super absorbent diaper and head out to the store to pick up some Big Boy Underwear! We'll get a few pairs and they'll be washed and ready to go as soon as he wakes up from his nap.

Off to Target we go (his favorite store because they have lots of cars) to hunt down the undies. Finally finding a pack with some great Disney characters on it we pick 'em up and head out. Of course we check out the cars first to which he says that "He NEEDS another car." Our reply, "We NEED to go home and eat lunch so you can take a nap and wake up to wear your big boy underwear." "NOOOOOOOOO"

He gets up from his nap to find 7 freshly laundered pair of underwear waiting for him in the dryer. One quick trip to the potty and we pull them out and give a quick explanation of what's going on. He picks out the Lightening McQueen pair and we're live. Diaper off, McQueen on. And he proceeds to freak out. It takes a few minutes to calm him down and tell him that it's ok and he needs to tell us before he goes pee so we can go to the potty.

Does he tell us? YES! Although it's after he pees in his underwear. Three pairs and four hours later we're back in a diaper. And apparently there is another use for his underwear.

Day2-No Success

Day 3-Sunday

Ok, let's chill on the underwear for now and keep to the timer. Sunday went pretty much like the past two days had gone. I think there may have been a little squirt, and we'll take it! Getting him to realize what is going on is the first battle.
Day 3-Minor Success

Day 4-Monday

By this time we're all pretty much over this whole potty training thing and we're pulling out all the stops. "If you pee-pee on the potty then you get a piece of candy!" But he doesn't seem to get the fact that he actually has to go in order to get his candy. Now the kid wants to pop a squat every 5 minutes just to get a sugar rush. This goes on for the greater part of the day until we decide to actually take a break and get out of the house, diaper bag in tow.
Day 4-No Success

There were a few minor successes in those 4 days. As I said, we'll take any little squirt that we can get. He needs to wrap his little mind around the whole thing and want to do it himself. We'll get there.

Playing Catch-Up

There's always that time when you have absolutely nothing going on for a while and then BAM! Craziness for the following weeks! (hence the no posting for almost a month!) So this will be the somewhat shortened version of what we've been doing for the past few weeks.

Chloe's Soccer Tournament

Annie, Jamey and the kids came to stay with us for the last weekend in July so Chole could participate in a weekend soccer tournament. Saturday's games were held at the fields behind Easton, just a few minutes away from our house. It was a rainy morning, but we were able to make the games and watch her team kick butt! If you don't know much about 3x3 play, look it up here: http://www.3v3live.com/ Her team won all of the games Saturday which meant that they got to play in the championship game at the Crew stadium on Sunday!

Saturday, the Columbus Crew had a special night to honor the teams in the 3x3 tournament. We were able to get tickets for the game and went with the rest of the team. It was a great night for the game and a great win for the Crew. Chloe's team was able to walk on the field prior to the start of the game. Elijah enjoyed running back in forth between me, Mike, Annie and Jamey. That kid doesn't sit still unless he's asleep or strapped into his carseat!

Sunday morning we headed over to the Crew stadium once again for the Championship game. After we finally found their field, we grabbed some seats in the bleachers and waited for her game to start.

Her coach was actually the coach of the other team that they were playing, so it looked to be a good matchup.

The match went pretty quickly, with Chloe's team taking the win! All the girls played really well and showed what a great team they are.

And Mike was super excited to get on the field at the end of the games! (he's a big soccer fan, I mean football fan, if you didn't already know!)

New York Vacay

We usually try to go to New York once a year to visit Mike's grandparents and family. Talking to Annie and Jamey, we decided to pick a week and head out! We left on the 31st and came home on the 7th. Elijah did really well in the car both ways. There were only a couple of fits from him wanting to watch Cars. Again. Eventually we were able to talk him into some other movies (with snacks) and all was well again.

After getting in around 4pm on Friday, it ultimately left time to jump in the pool! The water was pretty chilly, but it didn't seem to bother Mike or Eli one bit. I kind of hung out on the steps and watched, waiting for a sunnier day. And that was pretty much how the next few days went. Get up, eat breakfast, get in the pool for the rest of the day. Eli did great the whole time we were there. We are very lucky in that he is able to sleep just about anywhere. His nap schedule stayed on track all week and he was was pretty well behaved, minus a few toddler meltdowns. Here are a few pics from the pool:

After we finally got him in the pool, he loved it! He was getting pretty good at swimming by himself. And as with any kid, had an extreme obsession with the ladder!

Hopefully this works out well. Here is a video that Mike was able to capture on the phone of Eli swimming:

Thursday we headed out to Lake George for the day with Annie, Jamey, Chloe, Noah, Tom, Alicia, Bella, Lucas, Hannah and Alicia's mom. (Quite the crew!!) Alicia's family has a boat and was more than generous in letting us take it out for the day! The weather was perfect for boating and everyone had a great time. It was Eli's first time on a boat and he had a blast. I think he was a little nervous because he was more than content to just sit on my lap and look around.

We took a ride from the launch into the town and met the other half of the group. Eli and I went back out, with Mike this time. He was feeling kind of brave so he decided to change into his trunks and try to water ski:

And, he's up!

He did pretty well for not doing that in years!! He finally dropped himself because his legs were starting to cramp up. Good job honey!

The rest of the afternoon we spent walking around the town. It's a really fun little place to visit. Lots of shops to visit and tons of restaurants. We will definitely want to go there again the next time we're in NY for the summer! Here's another pic of the lake:

All in all it was a very nice trip. Great to hang out with Gram and Gramp and the rest of the family. It was some much needed time away for all of us.

That about sums up what's been going on here the last few weeks. I'll try to update again before a month goes by!

The Metro Gardens

My mom came out for a visit over the weekend. She needed to get her Eli fix which is totally understandable since he is by far one of the coolest 2 year old's out there. After Elijah's nap and a little bit of shopping we headed out to the Innis Woods Metro Garden. We've never been there before and I have to say that I can't believe we haven't. (We're a pretty big fan of our Metro Parks) It was really nice. We strolled through the gardens for a while before it started to rain on us. While we didn't take our camera on Saturday, the three of us went back on Sunday afternoon to walk the other side and took pictures then. Here are a few:

They actually are called Mickey Mouse Ears. We're going to look up the growing conditions on these to see if we can plant some at our house!

This was a cool little area to sit and watch the waterfall. Elijah of course had fun running around the rocks and looking in the water.

It actually took me a few minutes to get him to sit there. He kind of freaked out about the running water behind him.

That's one of the frogs we found hanging out in another area of the park. Definitely one of the boy's favorites!

A Walk in the Creek

Since the weather has been kind of unpredictable lately we try to get outside as much as we can. Today we decided to hit up Creekside after we did a little shoe shopping. (Eli needed new shoes since Samson decided to eat a sandal.)(He's up for adoption by the way. Samson, that is.)(Don't tell Mike.) Eli is absolutely captivated by water and ducks. We probably spent about 45 minutes hanging out by the creek, but with the boy that's never enough.

Mike and Eli spent a lot of time picking out rocks to throw in the water. Mike was able to find some good ones to skip across the creek. Eli pretty much just threw them right in front of himself. They didn't really get that far! Since he had his flip flops on, we let him walk in the water just along the edge. Guess what happens when you tell a 2 year old to be careful and not fall in? He slips and falls in. Here he is, just after:

But of course you take it all in stride. This wasn't the first time he rode home in just a diaper. It tends to be a theme when we visit the creek!

Boys Will Be Boys

An occasional Thursday brings with it a game night for Mike and some friends. So, while he goes out to hang with the guys I have the opportunity to chill with the boy. I usually take snacks and drinks with me when I pick him up from daycare so we can go do something immediately. Usually we go to the park and play but as of late he has something else that he likes to do. While he's into all modes of transportation: cars, school buses etc. his favorite right now is the airplane. Well, second favorite. Cars are still number 1.

So it has somewhat become a ritual for us to go see the airplanes on these Thursdays. We live pretty close to the airport and there is a viewing area at the end of one of the runways.

We take our snacks and drinks and watch them take off and land. And he loves it! Some days we don't see that many, but sometimes we see a ton. He seems to have eagle eyes when we are out there. He can see a plane coming from way off in the distance. Here are a few pics of him from yesterday:

It's great to take him out there and see how excited he gets with every single plane that goes by. The only problem with it is that every time he gets in the car he wants to go see the airplanes! Or watch a movie. He's seen a lot of movies.

Happy 4th! (even though it's now the 6th)

It was a pretty good weekend here in Columbus. We pretty much stuck around here for the holiday, which was fine because there was plenty to do.

We started Friday out with a bike ride on the Westerville bike path. We didn't do the whole 12 miles, maybe 5 or 6 at most. Mike's dad picked up a bike trailer for us at a garage sale last summer and we've been using it like crazy this year. Eli really seems to enjoy it, once we get going. As long as he has a snack and a drink, he's good to go.

Later that afternoon I saw a movie with my friend Amanda: The Proposal. It was super cute. A definite chick flick. It may have been a little predictable, but it had Ryan Reynolds in it and he is hot so that made everything OK.

Friday night we headed downtown for Red, White and Boom. After driving around for a half hour trying to figure out the best place to park, we finally found a lot. Ended up being pretty close to where we watched the fireworks so we were lucky. It's crazy the amount of people that ended up downtown as well for about 20 minutes of fireworks. We picked out a spot on a little grass hill and spent the next 45 minutes watching Elijah roll or run down it. He was happy so, whatever. When it got darker I was able to persuade Mike to let me buy a glow necklace for the boy. I secretly wanted one myself, so I bought Eli two. It was a little difficult to get good pictures because he kept moving so much, but here are a couple.

I'm pretty sure that he liked the fireworks once they started. He got a little freaked out at first but eventually lifted his head off my shoulder to watch them. We were standing next to the firetruck so he was a little preoccupied with that as well. (those are his thing right now!) We had about a 10 minute walk back to the car and he fell asleep on the way. It was definitely past his bedtime, but worth it!

Saturday morning we went to uptown Gahanna to watch the parade. Most of the participants threw candy out to the kids that were watching so the boy made out with a little stash. There were a couple of older kids by us so he didn't quite get as much as he would have liked, but he had fun running out there trying to get it. Here are a few pics from that:

The day got a little cloudy and rainy towards the afternoon, so we weren't able to do much more outside. Eventually it ended up being just a drizzle and we went to the festival that the church next to us was putting on. Eli got to ride a pony and jump in a bounce house. He was super excited about each. Once it started to rain a little harder we headed home. Luckily it's within walking distance so we didn't have to worry about finding parking again. We were going to let him stay up and watch the fireworks again, but at 9:30 he said he was ready for bed. No arguing here! He was obviously tired. We didn't hear a peep from him even when the fireworks started a half hour later. Mike and I were able to watch them from the back patio through a nice little break in the trees.

The excitement pretty much ended there. Sunday was for grocery shopping and cleaning up the front yard. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Third Time's a Charm!

I've been feeling a little random lately. Like there is a ton of stuff going on in my head that needs to come out in some form. Hopefully this is the platform that I'm looking for. Many family members and friends are always wondering what I and my family are up to and I figure that this could be the solve to that problem. (We're not so good with the phone.) There will probably be tons posted about the boy, a.k.a. bug, little man, squirt, squirtastic, or Eli punkin pie, and a little bit of what else is going on with the hubby and me. Or as I said, just random thoughts whenever they happen to come up.

So, here it goes. Another attempt at a blog. I've had 2 so far, but neither have quite turned out the way I had hoped. Let's see if I can make this one work.
