Potty Training Boot Camp

The time has come for The Boy to start using the potty. That's it. No "He's old enough" or "He really should be." The time is now. We took the holiday weekend as a great opportunity to have a little training session since he was going to be home with us for 4 days. Here's how it went down:

Day 1-Friday

After trying to figure out a good way to start this out we decided on using a timer. The count down was for every 30 minutes and he would go sit on the potty. Hopefully he would go during one of these times and realize what he doing and that it was a good thing. This went on all day and to our surprise, no suck luck. I believe there was only one time where even a little spray came out. He seemed to go in his diaper either right before the time went off or shortly after he got off the pot. I'm willing to be that we went through 15 to 20 diapers that day since we weren't able to catch him in time. Funny thing now, every time he hears a timer go off he says it's time to sit on the potty. I guess that's a good thing?
Day 1-No Success

Day 2-Saturday

We woke up on Saturday and headed straight to the bathroom. Of course after I take his diaper off and realize that it's super full, I know that nothing is going to happen on this trip. We once again start setting the timer, this time at 20 minute intervals. Hoping to catch him just before he actually goes. Again, no luck. We decide that maybe he's just not feeling the wetness of it because of the super absorbent diaper and head out to the store to pick up some Big Boy Underwear! We'll get a few pairs and they'll be washed and ready to go as soon as he wakes up from his nap.

Off to Target we go (his favorite store because they have lots of cars) to hunt down the undies. Finally finding a pack with some great Disney characters on it we pick 'em up and head out. Of course we check out the cars first to which he says that "He NEEDS another car." Our reply, "We NEED to go home and eat lunch so you can take a nap and wake up to wear your big boy underwear." "NOOOOOOOOO"

He gets up from his nap to find 7 freshly laundered pair of underwear waiting for him in the dryer. One quick trip to the potty and we pull them out and give a quick explanation of what's going on. He picks out the Lightening McQueen pair and we're live. Diaper off, McQueen on. And he proceeds to freak out. It takes a few minutes to calm him down and tell him that it's ok and he needs to tell us before he goes pee so we can go to the potty.

Does he tell us? YES! Although it's after he pees in his underwear. Three pairs and four hours later we're back in a diaper. And apparently there is another use for his underwear.

Day2-No Success

Day 3-Sunday

Ok, let's chill on the underwear for now and keep to the timer. Sunday went pretty much like the past two days had gone. I think there may have been a little squirt, and we'll take it! Getting him to realize what is going on is the first battle.
Day 3-Minor Success

Day 4-Monday

By this time we're all pretty much over this whole potty training thing and we're pulling out all the stops. "If you pee-pee on the potty then you get a piece of candy!" But he doesn't seem to get the fact that he actually has to go in order to get his candy. Now the kid wants to pop a squat every 5 minutes just to get a sugar rush. This goes on for the greater part of the day until we decide to actually take a break and get out of the house, diaper bag in tow.
Day 4-No Success

There were a few minor successes in those 4 days. As I said, we'll take any little squirt that we can get. He needs to wrap his little mind around the whole thing and want to do it himself. We'll get there.
